Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting. The incident was reported Sunday, March 14, 2021, at approximately 2:10 p.m., on the 100 block of North Rowan Avenue in Los Angeles.
Investigators have learned deputies from East Los Angeles Station responded to the residence regarding a medical rescue/suicidal person call.
Upon arriving, deputies encountered the described man inside a car. That man was armed with a kitchen knife and refused to comply with the deputies’ orders to step out of the car and drop the knife. A Mental Health Evaluation Team was requested and dispatched to the scene.
Prior to the arrival of the Mental Health Evaluation Team, the man exited the car while holding the knife. He continued to ignore commands to drop the knife. A less lethal stun bag was deployed, however, the man continued to ignore commands.
The man turned toward the deputies and began to charge at them with the knife in-hand and a deputy involved shooting occurred. The man was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.
Fire Department and deputy personnel rendered aid to the 34 year-old Hispanic man prior to him being transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The knife was recovered at the scene.

NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Detectives are responding to investigate a deputy-involved shooting. The incident was reported Sunday, March 14, 2021, at approximately 2:10 p.m., on the 100 block of N. Rowan Avenue in Los Angeles.
The suspect was struck by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No deputies reported injuries.
There is no additional information available at this time.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and no one is hit by the gunfire, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
