Advisory

Winter Storm: 3-5" of Snow by Noon, Snow Parking Regulations

Heavy snow has been falling in our area since just after 6:00 AM, leading to slippery roads and hazardous conditions. Plowing has started on the main roads and will continue as conditions permit. Snow is falling at a quick rate and we’re expecting 3-5” of accumulation by noon. Please use caution if you must travel and give plows plenty of space to operate safely. Also remember that snow parking regulations are in effect, which means no parking on the even-numbered side of the street except in Ocean Grove, where there are no parking zones designated by signs.

Forecast update via Tri-State Storm Watch:

Snow overspread the area around 6:00 a.m.  A heavy narrow band of snow moved through central Monmouth and produced snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.  Radar shows this band expanding in width and now covers much of Monmouth County.  The temperatures have fallen back into the mid 20s so the snow is accumulating on all surfaces resulting in slippery travel this morning.  Its all about where the banding sets up and based on radar trends and upper air analysis, central NJ and the Neptune area look primed to see period of heavy snow over the next couple of hours.
The big forecast challenge is when and where the change to sleet occurs.  Warmer air is being forced over cold air at the surface and the temperature up around 10,000 will eventually go above freezing resulting in a change to sleet.  Most of the guidance has the change to sleet occurring in the Neptune area around midday.
But before a change to sleet occurs, Based on radar trends, expect to see 3 to 5 inches of snow in the Neptune/Monmouth County area by Noon.
Precipitation will become lighter as the afternoon progresses with sleet the favored form of precipitation in central NJ and snow further north.
Overnight light precipitation will become steadier and perhaps change back to snow Friday morning.  Little accumulation of sleet and snow expected overnight but an inch or two of snow and sleet are possible Friday morning.
