SUMMARY: On January 31, 2021, Deputy A. Hylin, with the Victorville Police Department, when he saw Nissan Versa and a Chevy Cobalt in front of him driving northbound on Ridgecrest Drive. As the two vehicles came side by side they began to accelerate and race one another.

Deputy Hylin paced the Nissan at approximately 85 mph before the driver appeared to have noticed his patrol unit and began to slow down. The driver of the Nissan continued to accelerate and reached a speed of approximately 95 mph when he noticed Hylin’s emergency lights and began to slow. Both drivers eventually pulled to the side of the road and stopped, where Hylin made contact with them.
The 16-year old driver of the Nissan and the 17-year old driver of the Chevy were both issued a citation for illegal speed contest and released to parents at the scene. Each of the vehicles were occupied by three additional juveniles, all under the age of 17. They were all released to the custody of their parents, as well. The vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
The Victorville Police Department urges drivers and parents of drivers to consider the seriousness of illegal street racing. This activity can take lives, cost thousands of dollars in damages and fines, and land participants in jail. In the end there is no “winner.”
