South Brunswick Township was recognized as being one of the safest communities in the country by a national study. The company MoneyGeek analyzed crime statistics and quantified the cost of those crimes to identify the safest and least safe small cities and towns around the country. The study found that crime takes a toll on communities, not just emotionally, but economically as well. In addition to direct costs from loss of property, services for victims, and policing and corrections, residents of higher-crime locales often pay higher rates on car insurance and homeowners and renters insurance.
South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said, “This recognition is a result of a constant effort by our department and community to ensure the safety of everyone. Most importantly we work in cooperation and support of the community to address any issues and problems at the earliest stages. We communicate on a regular basis with our community on any patterns or trends in crimes we detect. Our partnerships with the community is the key to the success of the agency. None of this would be possible without the support of the Mayor, Council, and Township Manager Bernard Hvozdovic.”
The study was done in the wake of a year of upheaval due to the pandemic, politics, and social unrest, many Americans crave normalcy in 2021 according to the report. They found that many Americans fled, or dreamed of fleeing large cities during COVID-19 surges. To quantify the cost of crime in smaller cities and towns, MoneyGeek analyzed crime data and calculated the cost of crime in each place. They included data on violent crimes such as murder, rape, and aggravated assault, and on property crimes such as burglaries and car theft. Though property crimes are much more common, violent crimes are more costly.
“It takes a team to address the quality of life and crime challenges that face all communities. I want to thank all the men and women of the South Brunswick Police Department for their dedication and commitment to our community,” said Hayducka. The report ranked South Brunswick as the #20 safest community in the U.S., just ahead of neighboring Princeton at #21.
