The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, and all the cities that contract police services with the Sheriff’s Office, will host a gun turn-in on January 27th, 2021 from 12:00pm till 8:00pm. Ventura County is a safe community to live in and thankfully gun violence is not on the rise in our communities. But many residents own or have inherited firearms they no longer need or want. The Sheriff’s Office will host a gun turn-in on January 27th, 2021 from 12:00pm to 8:00pm at the Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Camarillo, Fillmore, Ojai and Headquarters (located at the government center) patrol stations. Turning in unwanted or unneeded firearms for destruction prevents misuse or accidental discharges within a home, but also rids the home of unwanted guns, thereby eliminating the risk of theft and the possibility of those unwanted guns ending up on the street and in the hands of criminals. In addition to all firearms, the Sheriff’s Office will accept non-working, antique, replica and BB/pellet guns. Those turning them in can bring them to any Sheriff’s patrol station on the listed date and time frame. We are asking that those who participate in this gun turn in do so by following Covid-19 safety precautions to include wearing a face mask and social distancing at least 6 feet apart. The following protocols MUST be followed when bringing a firearm to a station:
The Sheriff’s Office goal is to get unwanted and unneeded guns turned in for destruction to reduce the instances of mishandling, negligent discharge and to keep guns out of the hands of prohibited persons and criminals. As a reminder, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the contract cities are offering free gun safety locks. Members of the community can come to any listed police station as well as the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters station located at the government center to receive free gun safety locks during normal business hours Monday through Friday. Remember, Gun Safety is your responsibility! |
