An Increase in Commercial Burglary

Morgan Hill, Ca, January 21, 2021. As the City of Morgan Hill welcomes the New Year, we also have seen an 270% increase in commercial burglaries targeting two specific areas. When comparing data from a two month period, December through January this year to last year, commercial burglaries jumped from 6 to 22. The data collected by the Morgan Hill Police Department Crime Analyst reveals two trends. First, the Monterey Road business corridor has seen a significant increase in thefts from this time last year. Suspects are smashing business glass windows and doors and stealing the cash registers. The second area targeted has been construction and storage containers located at job sites or sporting venues. Suspects are gaining entry and stealing construction equipment and landscaping tools. The data indicates most of the burglaries are occurring on Wednesdays between the hours of 11 pm and 1 am.

On December 9, 2020, a community member spotted suspicious activity at Eriks Deli located at 309 Vineyard Blvd. Morgan Hill Police officers responded to the location and arrested a suspect who had broken into the business. The suspect who was arrested for the burglary at Eriks Deli has since been released, and is a person of interest in other burglaries.

Over the course of two months, Morgan Hill Police have made over six arrests and are seeking six additional suspects who have committed burglaries and thefts. The Department continues to work with the Santa Clara District Attorney Office to prosecute those who commit crimes in our community.

The Morgan Hill Police Department has been successful in making these arrests because our community has been vigilant in reporting suspicious activity. We thank you and value your assistance in solving these crimes. Please continue to remain alert and report suspicious activity, secure your property, empty cash registers prior to closing for the night and for individuals at job sites secure all containers and tools.

The Morgan Hill Police Department believes the best way to fight crime is in partnership with our community so please continue to report suspicious activity without delay.
