Male Voyeur Arrested for Peeping into Home

San Mateo Police Department arrested a suspect for peeking into a bedroom while loitering on private property. A security camera alerted the resident of motion in the backyard while she was inside her apartment.

San Mateo, CA – On Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 8:16 p.m., San Mateo Police Department officers arrested a suspect for peeping after they were called to an apartment building in the 800 block of Jefferson Court. The resident called police after seeing a man peering through her daughter’s bedroom window. A motion sensor activated a camera, which alerted the daughter by phone that a man was peeking through her bedroom window. Officers arrived on scene and saw the suspect had been detained by multiple family members in the backyard. Officers observed the suspect had his zipper down and later confirmed the crime via security camera footage. The suspect was arrested and charged with peeking into an inhabited building.

This case proves the benefits of having a motion activated video security system. As officers continue this investigation, we ask our community to safeguard your home with these tips:
Talk with your neighbors –  We have one of the most active neighborhood watch programs in the county. Join your neighbors in addressing neighborhood issues.
Lock all doors and windows – Remind your family to check windows and doors.
Light it up – Ensure bright lights are on around your entire home.
Install an alarm system – Alarms deter crime, protect valuables, and promote your personal safety, in addition to several other benefits.
Invest in Cameras – We are encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help us by notifying SMPD cameras are in your neighborhood at www.cityofsanmateo.org/NEST
