LASD Special Victims Bureau Detectives Arrest Sexual Predator and Are Seeking Additional Unidentified Victims

On Tuesday December 8, 2020, deputies from the Walnut Sheriff’s Station contacted a female adult on Brea Canyon Road and Sapphire Lane in Diamond Bar regarding a sexual assault incident. The victim disclosed to the detectives that at approximately 4:15am, while she was walking to work, she was approached by an unknown male who was also on foot. The suspect stopped the victim and asked her if he could borrow her cell phone.  The victim told the suspect “no” and explained her phone was a pre-paid phone and was low on minutes. The suspect appeared upset, turned, and walked away.  The victim continued walking to work.

Approximately five minutes later, the suspect returned and grabbed the victim from behind.  He placed the victim in a choke hold and dragged her approximately 100 yards into a large set of bushes on the side of the road where he sexually assaulted her while threatening her with a pocket knife.

The suspect was identified through DNA in the late evening hours of Tuesday January 5, 2021.  The suspect was arrested on Wednesday January 6, 2021 at his residence in Eastvale (Riverside County) and booked at the Walnut Sheriff’s Station. The suspect is named Joel Martinez and is described as a Male Hispanic adult, 37 years old.

On January 8, 2021, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Pomona Branch.  The District Attorney’s Office filed one count of kidnapping with the Intent to Commit Rape, one count of Forcible Oral Copulation, and one count of Attempted Forcible Rape, with a bail amount of $1,200,000.00.  His next court date at Pomona Court is unknown at this time.
