Community Safety Notification - Coyote Encounter

This is a community safety notification due to a reported coyote encounter today at the Campolindo High School track.  At about 6:30 a.m., a runner reported that he was stretching when a coyote attacked him and bit him on the leg.  Another runner was able to chase the coyote away.  The California Department of Fish and Wildlife was notfied and is investigating the incident.

Recently, our officers observed a coyote walking through the Rheem Center parking lot.  Although the coyote was not interacting with any people, one person tried to feed it as it passed Starbucks.  Do not try to feed or pet coyotes.  Please remember that coyotes are wild animals and their behavior is unpredictable.  If you are followed by a coyote, make loud noises.  If this fails, throw rocks or other items in the animal's direction.  Be aware of your surroundings when outdoors and do not leave small children or pets unattended.  Special care should be taken at dusk and dawn when coyotes are known to be active.

Please see the attached brochure on coyote safety, including tips on how to reduce the potential for coyote conflicts.  More information can also be found at www.keepmewild.org.

Please call Dispatch to report non-emergency incidents at 925-284-5010 or call 9-1-1 to report emergencies.
