Incident Summary

On 10/25/2020 at approximately 03:11 AM, the Petaluma Police Department received information from the Petaluma Fire Department that one of their on-duty Firefighters had just been intentionally struck by a vehicle.

Once the Firefighter was contacted and determined to not be seriously injured, he provided a suspect description.  We learned the Petaluma Fire Department was on scene with a patient having a medical issue in a shopping center parking lot. A subject later determined to be Everal Thompson, approached the Fire personnel who were tending to the patient and began to ask them questions.

Thompson was asked to leave and as he entered his vehicle, he drove towards the Firefighter and struck the victim.  Thompson then fled the area in his vehicle.  Through the investigation, Thompson was identified as a potential suspect and was contacted.  Thompson was identified by the Firefighter as the suspect and he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.

During an inventory search of Thompson’s vehicle, which was being towed, a loaded handgun was located in the passenger area of the vehicle. Thompson is a convicted felon and prohibited from owning firearms. He was transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked for the above charges.
