Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Investigators are continuing their investigation to a Deputy Involved Shooting that occurred in the 7600 block of Painter Ave in the city of Whittier on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at approximately 4:08 p.m.
 
Detectives have learned that a Deputy assigned to Whittier courthouse was off duty, not in uniform and was walking to his vehicle which was located in the parking structure next to the courthouse. While walking through the parking structure he observed two individuals looking into windows of parked vehicles including his own and he confronted the individuals as to what they were doing in the parking structure. One of the individuals began to ultimately advance on the deputy, at which time he identified himself as an off duty Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, and told the suspect to stop. The suspect reached for his waistband as if he was going to retrieve a weapon and continued to advance on the deputy at which time a deputy involved shooting occurred.
 
The suspect, a male white adult approximately 20 years of age, was struck in the upper torso by gunfire.  He was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
 
The deputy and no other civilians were injured during the incident.
 
A knife belonging to the suspect was recovered at the scene.
 
The second suspect left the location and is currently outstanding.  He is described as a male white or Hispanic approximately 20 years of age.
 
The investigation in on-going and there is no further information available at this time.


Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
