*2nd UPDATE* LASD Deputy-Involved Shooting, 1200blk W 109th Pl, uninc #LosAngeles
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting. The incident occurred Monday, August 31, 2020 at approximately 3:14 p.m., on the 1200 block of 109th Place in unincorporated Los Angeles.
Detectives have learned that deputies from South Los Angeles Station were patrolling the area when they observed an individual riding a bicycle near the area of 110th Street and Budlong Avenue commit a vehicle code violation.
The person riding the bicycle was described as a male Black adult approximately 30 years of age. As the deputies attempted to make a u-turn to make contact with the individual regarding the vehicle code violation, the suspect discarded the bicycle and began to run northbound on Budlong Avenue.
The deputies momentarily lost sight of the suspect and eventually saw him again near the 1200 block of West 109th Place. They again attempted to make contact with him regarding the violation. Upon making contact the suspect immediately punched one of the deputies in the face one time. After he punched the deputy, he dropped a jacket at which time a black semi-automatic handgun feel to the ground. The suspect made a motion toward the firearm, it was at that time a deputy involved shooting occurred.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene where they conducted life-saving efforts, however, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputies have been removed from the field pending review of the incident.
The investigation is on-going.

“Deputies assigned to the South Los Angeles Station contacted a male at 1200 Block of 109th Street. During the contact, a fight ensued between the suspect and deputies. The suspect produced a handgun and a deputy-involved “hit” shooting occurred. The suspect’s handgun was recovered. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are responding to the 1200 block of West 109th Place, unincorporated Los Angeles, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting.
No deputies were injured.
The suspect, a male adult, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and it results in the fatality of a person, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner - Coroner, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee. Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
