Tropical Storm Isaias - Monday Afternoon Update
Tropical Storm Isaias - Neptune Monday Noon Update
• Summary: A #TropicalStormWarning is in effect for our area as #Isaias moves north along the coast, and is expected to regain #Hurricane status later Monday afternoon. The worst of the wind and rain will be felt Tuesday afternoon and evening, but the storm will begin in our area early Tuesday morning, so any preparations should be completed today. Our primary concern from this storm will be strong wind with gusts up to 70 mph and sustained winds around 30-40 mph. Currently, Neptune is taking action to prepare for the storm by clearing drains, collecting bulk trash, and visiting businesses to check on any outdoor #COVID19-related tents which may need to be removed or secured.
• Hazards and Timing:
- Wind: Gusts over 70 mph and sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph has the potential to send any loose outdoor items airborne, as well as causing downed trees and power outages. The worst of the wind is expected Tuesday afternoon into the early evening, with the center of the storm passing by after sunset.
- Rain: A #FlashFloodWatch is in effect as heavy rain should bring us 1 to 3 inches throughout the day, with greater amounts inland. This will likely cause sporadic roadway flooding in low-lying spots such as RT 66, 33, and 35, as well as causing pooling along many other roads.
- Coastal Flooding & Marine: Coastal flooding will be possible in typically flood-prone areas at high tide between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM on Tuesday. Flooding should be minor and limited to what we would typically see during a moon/storm high tide. On the beachfront and ocean, extremely hazardous conditions will exist including strong #RipCurrents and swells over 11 feet expected in our area. Boaters and beachgoers should avoid going anywhere near the water.
• Actions:
- By Monday night, secure any loose outdoor items, furniture, decorations, and anything else that has the potential to become flying debris and bring in any bulk garbage. Also, move any vehicles away from low-lying, flood-prone areas. This includes those in locations susceptible to coastal flooding.
- If you operate a business that has placed any tents or tables outside due to pandemic restrictions, ensure these items are removed or fully secured so they can withstand the strong winds. NTPD officers will be visiting many of these locations on Monday to check on tents.
- Charge your important electronic devices in the event of a power outage.
- If you do experience a power outage without observing an emergent situation (fallen tree, downed wires) please report it directly to JCP&L, not by calling 9-1-1.
- If you do observe a hazard such as flooded roads, fallen trees, or hanging wires, call 9-1-1 to report it.
- If you're on the road during the storm, use extra caution. Several locations along RT 66, RT 33, and RT 35 can quickly flood during heavy rain and cause extremely hazardous driving conditions. Take it slow, and keep an eye on the road.
