At approximately 8:07 PM, officers from the Major Crimes Task Force attempted to pull over a vehicle for vehicle code violations.  The driver of that vehicle failed to pull over and it was obvious that
he was attempting to evade officers.   Soon after, the subject’s girlfriend called the Pomona Police Department and advised that the driver was her boyfriend.  She further advised that her boyfriend was armed with a handgun and was suicidal.   

The subject, a 43 year old male, was pursued by patrol units until the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) made contact on the phone with the subject.   Based on information obtained from CNT, to include the subject saying he was suicidal, the decision was made to call back the patrol units and to have only the police helicopter follow.  This was done to allow the CNT Team to attempt to make the subject surrender peacefully with no injuries to anyone.

The subject, who was driving his vehicle at relatively slow speeds, spoke to CNT for over two hours as he drove through the streets of Pomona.  At approximately 10:56 PM the suspect, who was still not being pursued by patrol units, was involved in a solo collision and taken into custody.  There were no injuries to any officers or citizens, and the subject was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The subject was held on a 5150 WIC (Mental Evaluation Hold) and charged with other criminal charges that stemmed from the suspect's actions after the pursuit was initiated.
