DETAILS:  At 11:13 pm on July 7, 2020 Patrol Units were detailed to the Princeton Terrace Apartment Complex on a report of a Missing Juvenile where the following occurred:  the mother of a 15 year old who suffers from Autism believed that her son had left the residence without her knowing.  Patrol Units began combing the area (including wooded areas) and the 15 year old was entered into the NCIC/SCIC as a Missing/Endangered Person which immediately broadcasts this incident to all Law Enforcement Agencies.  Sgt. Loretucci solicited assistance from Robbinsville Twp. PD and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office for K9 Units to aid in the search.  Sgt. Kivet & K9 Quori and Sheriffs Officer Smithson & K9 Goose arrived at the scene where they  assisted with the continued search for the 15 year old.

At approximately 1:28 am, an alert employee of the Princeton Wawa (Alexander Road) contacted the Princeton University Department of Public Safety in regards to a person inside of the store who was not wearing a mask, was asked to wear one, was very confused, and seemed like something was not right.   With the assistance of the NCIC/SCIC entry, Princeton University PD confirmed that the person inside of the Wawa was the Missing/Endangered 15 year old and Ptl. Glospie responded to that location.  Ptl. De Blasio transported the 15 year old’s mother to the Wawa and they were reunited.

Sgt. Loretucci and Ptl. De Blasio spoke with the 15 year old about different options on how to avoid getting lost in the dark and other ways to handle leaving the house.  In addition, the 15 year old’s mother was advised of Project Life Saver offered through the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office (**See Below Note).

Chief Garofalo and the WWPD wanted to thank our Law Enforcement partners at the Princeton University Department of Public Safety, the Robbinsville Twp. PD, and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office for always being there to support us during a time of a mutual aid request.  This incident could have taken a tragic route if not for the collaborative efforts of all and especially the alert Wawa employee.

**NOTE:   From the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office website (www.mercercounty.org/government/sheriff/senior-programs)

“The newly formed PROJECT LIFESAVER program identifies those people who might wander and disappear. Families are consulted and the potential wander wears a tiny wrist transmitter. Their life-saving information is stored in a computer database. Records with vital information, such as medicines needed, wandering history, past addresses where the wander might return, family contacts, and a photograph all help a rescue team to complete a successful search, in an efficient timely manner. Search times have been reduced from days and hours, to minutes. Average recovery times are well under 30 minutes.”
