July 3, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / CORONAVIRUS

WE ARE IN PHASE 4 – SPIKES CLIMBING IN MANY STATES
The unfortunate tide of spikes in Covid-19 cases nationally caused the new case count to go over 50,000 for the first time. If the doubling factor kicks-in, then Dr. Fauci’s recent warning that per day cases could reach 100,000. Attention will not only be on dialing back re-openings – happening already in Florida, Texas, Arizona and California, along with calls from Governors for people coming into states from “hot” states to self-quarantine. Already there is renewed assessment of hospitals to handle the serious cases again will become the focus – as it was when we were trying to “flatten the curve” in March, April and May. That explains the renewed strong recommendations from the CDC and IDPH that we ALL wear face coverings and keep social distancing. Respect for others – especially your loved ones – should be the primary reason that you choose to wear a face covering. It is a matter of good public health – not politics. How about: “Mask For US!”
Since asking Wednesday for your thoughts on a mask resolution, I received numerous positive comments that the Village Board pass a resolution strongly recommending everyone wear one when using Village buildings, shopping, browsing, or going into and exiting restaurants. If you leave your table or stool, put a mask on for the sake of all around you – and your sake as well.
The case count for Burr Ridge increased one to 103. Fourteen days ago, on June 19, there were 93 cases – so the increase has been 10 cases in that period. That is a higher 14-day differential number than last week, but still a very confident indicator that we are doing relatively well in Burr Ridge. The positivity rate remains under 3% for the area and the state. Nonetheless, we cannot ignore that our state numbers have been going up daily. That’s the wrong direction for all our had work. We must remain vigilant. Those over 60 must be cautious; staying home is always a safer route. If you go out, wear those face coverings – stay six feet apart and wash those hands.
Finally, it is Independence Day week – this year without parades or public fireworks – and hopefully without private fireworks displays. Setting off fireworks is illegal – and more to the point – dangerous! Every year there are stories of tragic consequences from private use and displays of fireworks. I have asked our police department to strictly enforce the law when it comes to illegal use of fireworks – even on the 4th of July. I know John Adams speculated that Independence Day “ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade with Bells, Bonfires and illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” And he was prophetically correct. (Well almost, Adams thought July 2nd when the resolution passed the congress, would be Independence Day.) But leave the “illuminations” to the pros, and put another hot dog on the grill.
“How long ago is it -- eighty odd years -- since on the Fourth of July for the first time in the history of the world a nation by its representatives, assembled and declared as a self-evident truth that "all men are created equal." That was the birthday of the United States of America.” Abraham Lincoln
