WE ARE IN PHASE 4 – SPIKES IN CERTAIN STATES
Our first weekend in Phase 4 of Restore Illinois has been successful in terms of more patrons coming to Burr Ridge stores and restaurants. Playgrounds and outdoor pools are opening. Gatherings of 50 persons inside and of even more outside are occurring. That being said-we all know there is a lag between exposure to the virus and symptoms manifesting. We have to remain vigilant. The virus is resurging around the country. Wear masks while you are amongst the public, and coming and going to businesses, bathrooms, etc.
As I noted on Friday, the outdoor dining tent program was extended to at least August 10 both because of the Village’s desire to ensure a safe dining environment for those uncomfortable with indoor dining at this point but also to support our terrific local restaurants. I thank the five Trustees who continued their support for safe, outdoor dining at our restaurants. Please continue to enjoy our restaurants, whether inside or out, as well as our shops and stores, but keep your social distance and wear face coverings to, from, and inside whenever possible. Dining, for now, is serious fun!
I participated in today’s weekly DuPage Board of Health call. The Board urged practicing wearing face coverings and social distancing. They continue to monitor the “doubling rate” as an indicator of spikes; that is, how many days it takes the number of daily new cases to double. We have yet to experience an increase in net new cases, while our statewide positivity rate continues to hold below 3%. There was discussion that those returning from Arizona, Florida, and Texas seriously consider self-quarantining for 14 days. These states are experiencing sharp increases in new cases and are re-closing bars and restaurants in response. Younger patients in these states are testing positive at much higher rates than those observed during the initial outbreak.
The Village’s case count increased to 98 over the weekend. There were 94 cases reported in the Village 14 days ago, meaning we have had just four new cases since June 15. The County is reporting an average of just 40 new cases per day, while death rates continue to fall. There are only 492 active cases in the entirety of DuPage County at this time (out of a population of over 900,000).
Finally, it is Independence Day week – this year without parades or fireworks – but with our liberty and independence always part of our daily lives….
