Advisory

Swift Water Safety Warning

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is again urging the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging in recreational activities on any stream or river in Washtenaw County or surrounding areas.  The recent heavy rainstorms have elevated water levels in rivers & streams which has increased the speeds of the currents.  Even if the water may seem calm at the surface, the currents under the surface may be overwhelming.

  • The Marine Patrol recommends that anyone engaging in water activities wear a life jacket.  The Sheriff has a number of "borrow and return" life jackets stationed at the following sites:
  1. Dexter Huron Metro Park
  2. Half Moon Lake boat launch
  3. Portage Lake Boat launch
  4. Bruin Lake boat launch
  5. Geddes Pond/Gallup park
  • When engaging in water activities we also strongly urge you to have a pland for the day if problems occur. Let a family member or friend know of your intentions on or near the water and to check in accordance with your plan and when complete.
  • Keep a close watch on children even if they are far from the water. They can quickly enter the water and get in difficulty, no matter the depth of the water, when your attention is diverted for only a moment.
  • Don't go into the water after someone who is in trouble. Rescue from shore and call for help.  The Sheriff's Office practices the following rescue plan for water emergencies: Reach, Throw, Row, Go
Regardless of how a river or stream may appear at the surface, it may not be the same underneathe the surface, prudence and caution should always be taken to avoid injury or death.

The Sheriff's Marine Patrol strongly recommends avoiding rivers, streams, and creeks until the current subsides.  Additional rain in the forecast will continue to make the water levels rise and the speed of the currents increase.

In the event of an emergency, always call 911 immediately to report the incident.
