SPRING 2020 > COVID-19
Today marks six weeks since Governor Pritzker issued an Emergency Disaster Proclamation on March 9 to combat the COVID-19 pandemic through social distancing. The Governor’s stay at home order remains in effect through April 30.
As past Chairman of the DuPage County Emergency Telephone System Board from 2014-2018, I am very familiar with the need to provide correct information for emergency responders. To be sure that you and your family are best protected in an emergency, you can sign up for Smart 911 using the Smart 911 App or at smart911.com. Smart 911 is a County-run product, which confidentially gathers health information needed by first responders should they need to respond to a call at your residence. By signing up for Smart911, you can help first responders have the key information they need about every person in your home, not only during this pandemic, but also during any emergency. First responders will be able to know how many and who may be living at your residence. They can be told by you if there are ambulatory, hearing, heart or sight issues – and what medications you are taking. When you dial 9-1-1, your Smart911 Safety Profile will automatically be displayed, allowing operators to send accurate information about you and those that live with you to emergency personnel. Smart911 also allows individuals to sign up for alerts from Burr Ridge officials to receive reliable information about the changing coronavirus situation. Individuals who sign up will also receive tailored alerts based on their specific needs and geographic location. Your information is not used or accessed unless an emergency call is made to your residence. Do the Smart thing and sign up for Smart 911!
IDPH today reported that the COVID-19 care at senior centers remains a priority. I was on a mayors-call this morning where I learned that the incidence of death from COVID-19 in our senior centers is 61%. While you may have heard or read that 20% of deaths are from nursing or senior centers, it is in fact three times higher because of the vulnerability these populations appear to have to COVID-19 due to underlying medical problems.
The positive case total in the Village is now 52; 8 in Cook and 44 in DuPage. As I have been advocating to you, there is real reason to be positive and optimistic. Remember, we follow the recommendations of the CDC and IDPH: The Cure is US. Practice social distancing, wash your hands with hotter water and lots of soap – and no hand shaking or hugging.
We live in the greatest country on earth – with the best and brightest health professionals and scientists. We will defeat COVID-19 and find the antibody serum that will protect all of us going forward. We will come out of this calamity with better knowledge and greater determination to be better prepared when a pandemic may next arise.
Thus, I offer you this thought:
