Man Arrested in Queens after Shooting and Seriously Injuring Woman in Holtsville
Suffolk County Police last night arrested a man in Queens after he shot a woman in Holtsville and then fled the scene in a motor vehicle.
Jiuber Mejia-Chicas used a handgun to shoot the 28-year-old mother of his child at her residence on Morris Avenue at approximately 9:25 p.m. Mejia-Chicas then shot himself before fleeing the scene in a 2005 Ford Escape. The victim was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol Sergeant Justin Carey observed Mejia-Chicas a short time later travelling westbound in the Ford on the Long Island Expressway and initiated a traffic stop. Mejia-Chicas failed to stop and continued westbound into Nassau County, then into Queens to the Whitestone Expressway where the vehicle stopped at approximately 10:15 p.m. Mejia-Chicas was arrested and transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Sixth Squad detectives charged Mejia-Chicas, 35, of Holtsville, with Assault 2nd and 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd and 4th Degree and Criminal Use of a Firearm 2nd Degree. He is being held at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip today.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
