April 3, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / CORONAVIRUS

Friday, April 3, 2020

GOVERNOR’S STAY-AT-HOME ORDER EFFECTIVE NOW THRU APRIL 30!

Burr Ridge is proud that Bo Jackson has made his home here for thirty years. Bo came to Downtown Burr Ridge this morning to be interviewed for his slogan “The Cure is US”, which Bo and a couple of his friends launched to draw more attention to the need for social distancing. A champion like Bo knows how to defeat an opponent and he is leading the fight to defeat COVID-19 with “The Cure is US.” You can see banners with this slogan on the two terraces of the I-55 Bridge, at two entrances to the Downtown and McCullough Park. McDonald’s has agreed to post the slogan too. April is the month we win this fight. Commit your family, friends, neighbors, and yourself to staying home through April 30. Let’s win this.

I have explained in past messages that it is difficult to get definitive information from IDPH about community-specific cases. Burr Ridge is no exception. The Chief shares my frustration. As of yesterday, IDPH has again advised municipalities that in an effort to avoid stigmatizing people IDPH will refrain from specifically identifying a positive COVID-19 person in any community. IDPH thus has recommended that first responders and law enforcement take appropriate protective precautions when responding to all calls – on the assumption that all calls could potentially expose a first responder to the virus. I have to respect and follow what the IDPH believes is the best policy.

That stated, publicly-viewable dashboards (available on the Village website) from Cook and DuPage county health departments showed Burr Ridge with five positive cases in Cook and nine positives in DuPage as of today. Even one positive case is too many, but with four senior centers in Burr Ridge, I feel fortunate that no major outbreaks have occurred in our community. That is a testament to the administrators in those centers and all of US keeping social distancing.  Remember, it’s on US to heed the Governor’s SAH Order and practice social distancing.  Vigilance is the call to arms.

I am very proud of the long, hard hours our patrol officers and commands have been spending to make sure you, our homes, and businesses are safe. We have one officer that is out on self-quarantine due to possible exposure. Our supply of personal protective equipment (“PPE) is sufficient due to a delivery from the national stockpile through DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. We also have received donations of N95 respirator masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer from residents and businesses in Burr Ridge. Our police are very appreciative of the donations. Burr Ridge resident Richard Federico, Microsonic Solutions, provided our public works staff with cleaning equipment and disinfectant solution from his company to disinfect our patrol cars and public works trucks, while masks made from supplies taken from our own Village Hall and retrofitted by a local manufacturer and family member of Village employee Gail DeMory were also donated. More about our great police officers tomorrow.
