5PM Update - 1 New Case; Food Pantry Raises $10,000 dollars + thousands of groceries donated. New safety procedure.

FOOD PANTRY:
"Food Drive Friday" was a huge success. The one day drive generated over $10,000 dollars in donations, hundreds of dollars in gift cards, and three large bins of grocery items. The Food Pantry run by South Brunswick Township feeds some of our neediest residents. Our amazing community came out and donated thousands of items of food, money and gift cards! The demand for the Food Pantry has grown tremendously and today’s support will make a big difference.

OFFICERS WEARING MASKS:
Chief Raymond Hayducka announced changes to safety procedures for the police department. “Starting today, you may see South Brunswick officers wearing masks coverings their face while in public. This is being done to ensure our safety and for your safety. The new procedure follows CDC recommendations for people to wear cloth masks or face coverings in public to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. This approach coupled with safe social distancing will allow for the greatest protection of all we serve,” Hayducka said.

NEW CASE:
South Brunswick Township has been notified of 1 new case today, a male in his 30’s who is hospitalized.

FRAUD ALERT:
Several local pizzerias have been targeted for fraudulent activity over the past week. The same caller appears to contact each store and order pizza for the police department. In each case, the caller indicates that he will come to pick up the pizza to deliver it. Three pizzerias have lost hundreds of dollars when they learn the order was fraudulently placed.

We are urging local food establishments to utilize a confirmation process and require a credit card for any large orders. Several residents have placed legitimate orders for food to be delivered to the police department and we appreciate the outpouring of support from the community.

We have several leads in the cases and believe a suspect will be charged.

SAFETY ISSUE:
While there is added safety from wearing plastic gloves or face masks, if you improperly dispose of them it adds to the problem. The pandemic has seen a large increase in people wearing the added protection, but residents need to remember to properly throw the items in the garbage to limit any issues.
