Prescribed Fire Project Notification Thursday & Friday- April 2 & 3, 2020

Prescribed Fire Project Notification
Thursday & Friday- April 2 & 3, 2020

If conditions continue to be favorable, Firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District and CAL Fire will be conducting a small Prescribed Fire Project on Thursday & Friday, April 2 & 3 at the top of Donald Drive in the Orinda Oaks Open Space.

With two days of clear, breezy weather followed by two to three days of rain the conditions are nearly ideal for prescribed burning. The project is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM each day and will be concluded by 5:00 PM. Using prescribed fire will reduce the wildfire fuels in the area prior to the 2020 fire season.

Safety is our number one priority. The burn is being set up while surrounding grasses are green and will be executed according to a strict “go, no go” checklist. The project is also being coordinated with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the size and timing of the fire will minimize smoke impacts on homes and other smoke-sensitive sites. If conditions change the burn will be rescheduled.

Residents in the Donald Drive neighborhood may see or smell smoke in the area. Closing exterior doors and windows will help to keep smoke from entering homes. Signs cautioning park visitors of the additional fire equipment traffic and potential for reduced visibility along the roadway will be posted along Donald Drive and at the Park entrances.

We will continue to keep local residents informed of any changes in the plan via Nextdoor and MOFD’s Social Media.
