March 31, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / CORONAVIRUS
Tuesday, March 31, 2020

GOVERNOR’S STAY-AT-HOME ORDER EFFECTIVE NOW THRU APRIL 30 !!!

Take a deep breath, exhale – and commit your family, friends, neighbors, and yourself to staying home through April 30. I again support the Governor’s bold act to insure social distancing from the coronavirus COVID-19 by ordering us to Stay-At-Home. As our Bo Jackson has championed: “THE CURE IS US!” “The Cure is US” slogan will remind all of us that our vigilance will win the fight against COVID-19. You can see banners with this slogan on the two terraces of the County Line Road Bridge, at the entrance to the Downtown and at Purdie McCullough Park (Plainfield & County Line Road). Social distancing is the new norm – for good reasons.

A great deal of anxiety has centered on the possibility of COVID-19 patients overwhelming the hospital system. The State has determined that sufficient hospital capacity is presently available to serve the residents until the pandemic’s peak hits Illinois in mid-April, at which time additional capacity will have been completed at locations such as McCormick Place, where an additional 3,000 beds will be available for non-infectious patients. Illinois Department of Public Health Dr. Ngozi Ezike, MD reiterated her previous statement that the great majority of people, up to about 80% of positive tests, will not need hospitalization. A survey sent by the IDPH to individuals testing positive received responses showing that 48% of the positive tests recovered within 7 days. Be confident, but be cautious and vigilant. Stay Home.

Consistent with similar state, county and municipal declarations, I have signed a Declaration of Emergency in Burr Ridge. One of the reasons for the Declaration is to address staffing of our Police and Public Works Departments. Specifically, the Declaration suspends all aspects of our collective bargaining agreements except for those related to pay. Consistent with the Family Medical Leave Act exceptions that the Village Board passed at its March 30 meeting, this Declaration will better provide Chief Madden, Director Preissig and Administrator Pollock the authority to implement emergency staffing protocols and procedures with more flexibility during the declaration (e.g. denying vacation requests for leave). As Mayor, I believe this action at this time will better protect the safety and health of the residents and our businesses. The Declaration is only effective until the Board’s next scheduled meeting on April 13th, at which time these powers are automatically rescinded. If I deem it needed, I will then consult the Board and may reissue the Declaration thereafter.

Go to www.burr-ridge.gov to find a list of our restaurants and counter service food establishments that are providing take-out meals. Place your orders and help them get through this crisis. The Village also has a complete list of all business resources available on our website for any business in need of help during this time.
