5pm Tuesday Update; Message From Mayor Carley; Managing Stress; Shopping Guidelines;Amendment to Allowable Businesses

The state has announced that we have reached 18,696 confirmed COVID-19 cases state-wide, with 1,277 total cases in Middlesex County. We have been notified of 1 new case in South Brunswick, a female in her 60s, currently hospitalized.

Mayor’s Message:
Mayor Carley would like to thank everyone for doing their part to help slow the spread of the virus. He especially wanted to thank our first aid squad and fire department personnel, who have been continuing to provide exemplary service to the residents of South Brunswick during this challenging time. “These volunteers have been continuing to serve our community, putting themselves on the front lines to help our community members, and for that we are thankful!”

Mayor Carley wanted to assure our residents that we are in contact with county officials on a daily basis, making sure we are doing all we can to protect our Township.

In addition, Mayor Carley wanted to share some tips on how to maintain calm during this stressful time.

What are things I can do to support myself and the people I care for during this stressful time?

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
  • Connect with others through calls (audio or video), instant messaging, email, letters, or other forms of communication, even if you cannot be together in person.
  • Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
Patrons entering essential retail businesses should abide by the following guidelines:
  • If an individual must leave home to access essential goods, they are encouraged to go at non-peak times, to keep distance from other customers in the store, keep visits as brief as possible, and to go alone if possible.
  • When shopping and standing in line, customers should keep six feet between themselves and other patrons/staff.
  • Individuals should not enter a retail facility if they have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (such as fever or a cough), have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or are undergoing a quarantine for potential exposure to COVID-19.
Amendment to List of Businesses That May Operate:
Governor Phil Murphy and State Police Colonel Patrick Callahan enacted an Administrative Order amending which businesses are permitted to operate and clarifying ways in which some businesses may operate in accordance with Executive Order No. 107 as follows:
  • Individual appointments to view real estate with realtors by individuals or families shall be considered essential retail business. Open houses are still considered impermissible gatherings.
  • Car dealers may continue to conduct online sales or remote sales that are consistent with current law. In the event of such a sale, the car may be delivered to the purchaser or the purchaser can pick up the car curbside or in the dealership service lane.
  • In accordance with the guidance released by the federal Department of Homeland Security, effective Tuesday, March 31, at 8:00 a.m., firearms retailers are permitted to operate – by appointment only and during limited hours – to conduct business which, under law, must be done in person. The NICS background check system will be up and running to process firearms purchases.
  • Golf courses are considered recreational and entertainment businesses that must close to the public and to members associated with private golf clubs
