Advisory

Please call Sheriff's Office to report concerns of visitors' 14-day self-quarantine. Thank you for your cooperation.

Call the Sheriff's Office to educate visitors on the 14-day self-quarantine

The Sheriff's Office urges Beaufort County residents not to take matters into their own hands or make assumptions about Beaufort County visitors. There have been reports of residents taking it upon themselves to address and/or harass Beaufort County visitors, to include the following note that was left on a vehicle, which had a New York license plate:

"BCSO and Security have been notified of your location. Please stay healthy + please follow quarantine guidelines,. During this time HHI IS NOT a vacation destination any more than NYC!"

The person who received this note had been in Beaufort County since January, 2020, and, as a result, was not subject to a 14-day self-quarantine.

The Sheriff's Office strongly discourages residents from participating in this type of behavior.

We urge you to contact the Sheriff's Office at 843-524-2777 if you have a concern, so our deputy sheriffs and municipal law enforcement officers can educate newly arriving visitors on the requirements of a 14-day self-quarantine under the governor's executive order, when applicable.

If necessary, and as with other provisions of the governor's executive order (please see the attached PDF document), the Sheriff's Office can issue citations and make arrests for violations of section 16-7-10 "illegal acts under state of emergency" and all other state laws.

Many people have heeded public health and government recommendations not to travel during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As an example, from Saturday, March 28, 2020 through today, the Hilton Head Island Airport has received a total of 17 passengers on four incoming commercial flights. Those flights originated from Dallas, Charlotte and Chicago.

Addition to Governor Henry McMaster's coronavirus (COVID-19) executive order, announced last Friday

On Friday, March 27, 2020, Governor McMaster added a provision to his executive order regarding coronavirus (COVID-19). The addition to the governor's executive order means that "all visitors to the State of South Carolina from the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, New Jersey, the City of New Orleans and other areas deemed to be at high risk for COVID-19 infection must immediately isolate or self-quarantine for 14 days or for the duration of the individual's presence in South Carolina, whichever is shorter. Failure to comply could result in a $100 fine or up to 30 days in jail. Executive Order No. 2020-14."

The above quote was taken from a South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control flier, which is attached to this advisory.

Food and grocery delivery options

In addition to the many restaurants delivering food during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Beaufort County supermarkets/grocery stores have delivery services. Kroger, Publix, Bi-Lo, CVS, Harris Teeter and Target are among those that offer a delivery option through third-party companies, including Instacart and Shipt. Please visit your favorite store’s website to check if it has delivery service.

Thank you to Beaufort County residents

As we move through this concerning coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner and the men and women of the Sheriff's Office would like to thank Beaufort County residents for their continued compliance with social distancing and the governor's executive order, and for their cooperation and courtesy with first responders and with each other.

Any concerns regarding possible violations of the provisions of the governor's coronavirus (COVID-19) executive order, should be directed to law enforcement.
