| The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has received a generous supply of disinfectant spray from a Paso Robles distillery that converted its distillery operations to assist frontline responders. During the third week of March, Aaron Bergh, President and Founder of Calwise Distillery Co. in Paso Robles, reached out to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office through the Camarillo Police Department with an offer we couldn’t refuse. Bergh has a special connection to Ventura County, having been born and raised in Camarillo with his parents still living there. Like so many other first responder agencies, the Sheriff’s Office was running low on hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray, both needed to keep frontline Sheriff’s deputies safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bergh’s distillery normally produces gin and rum, but after hearing about the short supply of disinfectants, he realized his equipment and supply chain could be used to help keep first responders supplied and safe. Three of the ingredients typically used to make spirits, which are glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, and ethanol alcohol, are also used to make the sanitizer and disinfectant. Bergh quickly transitioned his business into producing bulk hand sanitizer and disinfectants and distributing them to frontline responders. On March 25th, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office received its first shipment of 15 gallons of alcohol-based disinfectant. This supply was distributed to the Sheriff’s six patrol stations, where it will be placed in every patrol car as a way to disinfect deputies and their vehicles. The Sheriff’s Office already ordered more disinfectant spray from Calwise and plans to distribute it to all Sheriff’s facilities. Understanding that we are still in the early stages of this pandemic, Bergh plans to continue producing hand sanitizer and disinfectant that are in accordance with World Health Organization standards. Bergh is making these products available to all first responder agencies, government agencies and charities in need of hand sanitizer. |
