Temple City Announces First Coronavirus Case

Temple City officials today confirmed the city’s first positive case of COVID-19, or the new coronavirus.

Due to federal privacy laws, no additional information regarding the patient is available. The City maintains an informational webpage at templecity.us/coronavirus.

“The City continues to monitor the coronavirus pandemic and follow the latest guidance from public health officials,” said Mayor Tom Chavez. “We will update the Temple City community as more details are made available.”

Chavez said the incident is a reminder that all residents have a personal responsibility to help stop the spread of the virus. He reiterated that panicking does not help the situation.

“The Temple City community needs to stay unified in how we handle and react to this situation,” he added. “We know there will be more cases, but to reduce the spread, be informed. Continue to practice social distancing and stay home except for essential needs.”

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough and shortness of breath, and may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days after exposure. The illness reportedly varies in intensity from person to person, with some patients showing few or no symptoms and others becoming severely ill and dying.

The latest county statistics reveal 536 reported COVID-19 cases and seven deaths.

"While painfully unfortunate for our community and those around the world, we take comfort in the resilience of Temple Citians in the face of what we hope will be a very temporary situation," Chavez said. "Together, we'll get through this."
