COVID-19 update from the Haworth Mayor and Council (3/18/20)

Dear Haworth Neighbor:

As the COVID-19 crisis enters a new week, we would like to respond to the matters and questions that you have been raising for us.  We will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

Your Mayor and Council

1. Our regular trash collection (garbage and recycling) will continue to follow the established schedule unless otherwise notified;
2. We hope to have our regular summer programs (Tennis, Swim Club, Children’s Rec); planning by the responsible councilmembers, committees, and volunteers is in progress and they will be ready to launch their programs when the public health conditions allow;
3. The new regulations regarding single-use plastic bags and plastic straws will go into effect March 24 as planned; fines will not be imposed until we return to normal conditions;
4. The Haworth Public School and Northern Valley Demarest High School will remain closed until further notice; by all reports, online instruction is going well; remember, however, that the logic of social distancing says it is not safe for children to gather in groups to study or play;
5. All Haworth parks, playgrounds, and fields, including school properties, will remain closed to use until further notice;
6. The Haworth Municipal Library remains closed until further notice;
7. Haworth food establishments are cooperating fully with State and County directives; they are available for delivery, take-out, and curb-side pickup and deserve your patronage;
8. The Governor has strongly urged all residents to stay home between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am to minimize social contact;
9. The Haworth Municipal Court session for March 26 has been cancelled; we will keep you posted on the status of other meetings and new restrictions put in place by the State and County;
10. As noted in our last update, Borough Hall will remain closed to the public; key Borough staff may be reached by their email and voicemail and will continue to provide service;
11. The Haworth Police Department remains on the job protecting our residents. Patrol cars and station are being cleaned and disinfected regularly;
12. The DPW has adopted a modified staffing schedule to ensure that social distancing practices are adhered to as they see to the maintenance of the town. Vehicles and equipment are being cleaned and disinfected regularly;
13. Our dedicated Fire and Ambulance volunteers stand ready to respond to any emergencies. Please call 911 in case of emergency.

Remember that the virus spreads mainly by surface transmission and that the best defense is minimizing contact with others, social distancing, and social separation.

Stay well.
