Somerset Declares State of Emergency

On March 18, 2020 the Somerset Boards of Selectmen and Health declared that a state of emergency exists in Somerset.  This declaration is consistent with the declaration issued by Governor Baker.  This local declaration emphasizes that the Board of Selectmen is using all its resources to protect the health and safety of its residents and employees.  If necessary a local declaration allows the Board with spend funds without appropriation (must notify DOR) to meet the needs of the emergency.  The declaration also allows the town to invoke emergency procurement provisions, if needed.

As a result of the ongoing spread of the corona virus, be advised:

  1. All work related travel is discouraged until further notice.
  2. All conferences, seminars and other discretionary gatherings involving external parties should be held virtually or cancelled until further notice.
  3. Regular business meetings shall continue, including but not limited to mandated public or board meetings.
  4. Public meetings will be closed to the general public unless there is a mandated public hearing scheduled.
  5. We will work with SATV to ensure that they continue to film public meetings.

Effective 3/18/2020 all Town offices will be closed to the public.  If you need to visit a department in person, please phone to schedule an appointment.  Inspections may continue as needed.  Please call the Health Agent or the Building Official to schedule.

Please check the Town’s web site for specific departmental information.  The town clerk, recreation, library, police and fire departments may be providing department specific information.

The highway department will be limiting contact with the public and will spend the next couple of weeks providing maintenance to buildings and grounds.

Many of our functions can be done by phone or on line and be sure to use the drop box at Town Hall.

Check https://mass211.org/  located on the town’s website for more detailed statewide information.

The Governor has announced economic support for small businesses with a $10 million loan fund to provide relief to those affected by COVID-19.  The town’s website has additional information about the application process.  State officials are also working with the Small Business Administration to activate an Economic Injury Disaster Loan program.  Further information can be found on the town’s website.
