Lake County Superior Court Announces Closures

LAKE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT ANNOUNCES CLOSURES DUE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Issued: March 17, 2020

On March 12, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued Executive Order N-25-20 in further response to the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Among other things, this Order mandates compliance with state and local public health officials as pertains to measures to control the spread of COVID-19. Yesterday, Lake County Public Health Officer Dr. Gary Pace issued Order No. c20-2 which prohibits any gatherings over 100 people and recommends that gatherings of less than 100 people be cancelled. The Order also requires that gatherings of 35 of more people comply with strict COVID-19 risk mitigation measures, including social distancing.

While the court provides an essential government service, in an effort to comply with the Public Health Officer’s Order and to protect court users and staff from the spread of COVID-19, the court has decided to close from Wednesday, March 18, through April 1, 2020. At that time, in consultation with the Public Health Officer, the court will determine if it is safe to resume normal operations, resume limited operations, or remain closed.

·         During the court closure from March 18, 2020 through April 1, 2020, the court will only handle in-custody arraignments, juvenile detentions and preliminary hearings in which time has not been waived.

·         Court clerk’s offices will be closed.

·         Self-Help Center will be closed.

·         All regular court calendars will be rescheduled. Notice of the new date will be sent to you or your attorney.

·         Jurors scheduled to appear will be rescheduled and sent a new notice.

·         Any restraining order currently in effect will be extended to the new hearing date.

·         Any family law temporary emergency orders will be extended and remain in effect until the new hearing date.

The court understands the delicate balance between public safety and the timely administration of justice. Under Government Code Section 68115, the court has received an emergency order from the Chief Justice to extend statutory timeframes and declare March 18, 2020 through April 1, 2020 court holidays.

It is important to note, this closure is not in response to a specific notice of exposure at any court facility or to any staff. Instead, it is in an abundance of caution to help limit the spread of the virus.

As the situation is quickly evolving, we will keep the public up to date on our website www.lake.courts.ca.gov.
