Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives responded to the 7700 block of Eastern Avenue in Bell Gardens, to assist Bell Gardens Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an Officer-Involved shooting.
 
Detectives have learned that Bell Gardens Police Department (BGPD) officers responded on Monday, March 9, 2020 at approximately 10:30 A.M. to a residence located on the 7700 block of Eastern Avenue in the city of Bell Gardens, regarding a family disturbance call.  Upon their arrival, BGPD officers learned that the suspect, a male Hispanic adult, had robbed and carjacked his mother.
 
Although BGPD officers initially attempted to detain the suspect, the suspect fled the scene, avoiding apprehension.
 
Later that evening, at approximately 9:30 P.M., BGPD was notified that the suspect had returned to the residence.  BGPD officers responded to the residence and attempted to arrest the suspect.  The suspect refused to comply and cooperate and barricaded himself inside the residence. After several hours of attempting to convince the suspect to peacefully surrender, the suspect exited the residence. 
 
During the suspect’s exit from the residence, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
 
The suspect was struck by gunfire and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
 
No officers were injured during the incident.
 
The robbery and carjacking victim was not injured.
 
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
