Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a man in North Bellport last night.
Henry Dittmer was driving a 2017 Lincoln sedan eastbound on Sunrise Highway, west of Exit 55, when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2017 GMC Sierra at approximately 9:45 p.m. The Lincoln veered off the roadway into the center median and struck the divider. The GMC continued eastbound for approximately 100 feet and crashed into a concrete pillar under the Sills Road overpass.
The driver of the GMC, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead. Dittmer, 77, of Bay Shore was transported to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
