Getting To Know IMPD - In Honor of Black History Month
Officers Demetric & Dominic Smith: Demetric has been an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for the past 13 years and his brother Dominic has been an officer with the IMPD for the past eight years. Both officers currently patrol on North and Downtown District. The identical twins are natives of Indianapolis and pridefully live in the areas they work. Both have spent their careers in patrol. Patrol/Beat officers respond to 911 calls for help, patrol areas to protect citizens and property, respond to accidents or stranded motorists. These officers are the first line of defense for many street crimes.
Beat officers are the backbone of any police agency. They have more interactions with any other officer on a police department. Demetric said he patrolled in the neighborhood he grew up in the first 10 years of his career, and now he serves an evidence technician on North District. It was really important for the people he grew up with to realize that he didn’t change, just his occupation. This has helped maintained a healthy dialogue with the community he serves. Demetric enjoys talking with people, teaching and helping people make good decisions. Demetric said he “sincerely believes that there is no greater gift than to give someone the gift of your time.”
There should be no surprise that the two answered the questions exactly the same. They both believed in community, service, and helping people they serve. At the end of the day, they want people to feel heard and to leave people with smile on their worst day. Indianapolis is a better place because of these two officers.
