Cinnaminson Police Department and Cinnaminson School District Partner on Installation of Radar Speed Signs Throughout the Township.

Cinnaminson Police Department and Cinnaminson School District Partner on Installation of Radar Speed Signs Throughout the Township.

The new solar powered signs utilize radar to determine a vehicle’s speed and then display it, reminding the driver of their actual speed.  If a vehicle travels over a predetermined speed, the sign will then flash the numerical speed as well as a bright white light.    In addition, the signs include a safety feature which disables the visual feedback if a predetermined speed has been met, thereby stopping individuals from “racing” the sign to see how high they can get the sign to read.  Studies have shown that the visual feedback provided by these signs have reduced speeding by five to ten percent.  The reduction in speed typically lasts for several miles after the sign has been passed.  The signs record traffic volume and speed which provides data to law enforcement officers for analysis and assists with enforcement.  However, the signs do not record specific vehicles and cannot be used for issuing summons.  The radar speed sign project was implemented through a shared service program between the Cinnaminson Police Department and the Cinnaminson School District.  The majority of the signs will be installed at or near the district’s elementary and middle schools.  The Cinnaminson Police Department and Cinnaminson School District continue to work closely on projects which maintain the safety and welfare of our student population and the general public.  Radar signs are currently installed on New Albany Road in front of the New Albany Elementary School and on Forklanding Road in front of the Cinnaminson Middle School.  Additional signs will be installed on Wynwood Drive, as well as other high traffic areas within the Township.  For additional information, contact Police Chief Richard Calabrese at (856) 735-2360.
