Duarte Crime Blotter for the Week of February 16-22, 2020

The following is a synopsis of crimes reported for the week of February 16–22, 2020:        
 
February 16, 2020

  • Petty Theft Arrest:
At approximately 5:15 pm, deputies responded to Target located at 1050 Huntington Drive, regarding security detaining an adult female for shoplifting. Security stated they observed the suspect enter the store and return several items to customer service. The suspect then proceeded to select numerous items throughout the store and place them in a shopping cart. The suspect then exited the store without paying for the items and was detained by security. After further investigation, the suspect stated she intended to return to the store and pay for the items after she placed them in her car. The $427 worth of merchandise was returned to the store. The suspect was a resident of Azusa.      
 
February 17, 2020
  • Petty Theft:
A petty theft was reported in the 900 block of Hamilton Road. Sometime between 2:30 and 5:45 pm, unknown persons stole the spare tire to the victims 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The spare tire was attached to the rear door of the Jeep, and the lug nuts holding the tire were found lying on the ground. 
 
  • Petty Theft:
A petty Theft was reported in the 1900 block of Wardell Street.  A "Ring” doorbell was stolen from the front porch. The loss was estimated at approximately $200.
     
February 18, 2020
  • Grand Theft:
A grand theft was reported in the 800 block of San Marcos Lane. The elderly victim received an email she believed was from Amazon regarding a recent order. After checking her account and noticing she had pending orders, she called the phone number attached to the email. The person on the other end told the victim in order to resolve the issue, she had to go to Target and purchase two $500 gift cards then call back with the numbers on the back of the card. The victim complied however, when she tried to call back again, the number was no longer in service.
 
  • Grand Theft:
Sometime between 3:30 and 4:00 pm, a utility trailer was stolen from a driveway in the 800 block of Francita Avenue. Prior to the theft, Ring surveillance footage showed an adult male wearing a blue shirt and dark pants under the trailer, raising the front end which is common in order to prepare the trailer for towing. When the victim returned home at 4:00 pm, the trailer was gone. For some unknown reason, the Ring motion did not activate when the trailer was taken. The trailer is still outstanding.     
      
 
February 19, 2020
  • Petty Theft:
A petty theft was reported at Target located at 1050 Huntington Drive.  Security stated four males entered the store with a shopping cart containing numerous Target grocery bags and reusable Starbucks coffee cups. They attempted to return the coffee cups at customer service, but were told they had to return them at the Starbucks inside the store. At Starbucks, they selected ten more coffee cups and attempted to return them with the one’s they entered the store with. When they transaction was denied, they left the store with all the cups. The loss of the ten cups was estimated at approximately $230.
 
  • Grand Theft Auto:
A grand theft auto was reported at the Duarte Nissan located at 1434 Buena Vista Street. The victim dropped her 2018 Nisan Versa off for service at 7:00 am, and the service staff parked the vehicle in the service area parking lot with the keys inside. When the service employee went to retrieve the car at 2:00 pm for service, the car was gone. Surveillance footage showed a white sedan pulled into the lot and a bald adult male exit the passenger side. The suspect then drove off in the victim’s vehicle and out of the parking lot with the white sedan following. The vehicle was recovered on February 21st by LAPD.
 
February 20, 2020
  • Vehicle Burglary:
A vehicle burglary was reported in the area of Mountain Avenue and Cinnamon Lane. Sometime between February 18th and the 20th, unknown persons entered the victim’s vehicle and stole a $100 GPS device that was located under the front seat. There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle.

February 22, 2020
  • Residential Burglary:
A residential burglary was reported in the 800 block of Cinnamon Lane. Sometime between 3:30 pm on February 19th and 7:30 am on the 20th, unknown persons stole camping equipment and a keyboard from the garage. Entry was made by forcing open the wooden garage door.  The loss was estimated at approximately $430.
 
  • Attempt Burglary:
An attempt residential burglary was reported in the 1900 block of Huntington Drive. At approximately 8:00 pm, the victim was in his residence when he heard two loud bangs on the front door. The victim thought someone was breaking in and yelled out he was getting his gun. The victim looked at his security camera and saw an adult male wearing a white sweater with stripes on the sleeves over a dark jersey displaying the #88, standing by the front door. The camera also showed another adult male wearing a light colored hoody standing on the grass with an adult female. All three were last seen running eastbound Huntington and out of sight. There was visible damage to the door frame, evidence of someone trying to force open the front door.  
 
  • Vehicle Burglary:
A vehicle burglary was reported in the parking lot of the Days Inn located at 1533 Huntington Drive. Between 8:30 pm on February 21st and 12:00 pm on the 22nd, unknown persons entered the victims locked vehicle and stole three cell phones, a speaker and prescription medication. There appeared to be no signs of forced entry. The loss was estimated at approximately $950.
