SUBJECT: Motor Vehicle Stop Leads to Narcotics Arrest

LOCATION: State Highway 66 in Ocean Township
ACCUSED: Melvin J. Atkins, 39 year old male of Newark, NJ
NARRATIVE: On February 21st, 2020 at approximately 9:30 pm Police Officer James Stephens was on patrol in the area of Highway 66 near the Asbury Park Traffic Circle. After witnessing a motor vehicle violation Stephens conducted a traffic stop and encountered three occupants. Further investigation revealed that the passenger later identified as Melvin J. Atkins was in possession of Methamphetamine and prescription narcotics without a valid prescription. Atkins was placed under arrest, processed and released on a criminal summons pending an initial court appearance.
