Burlington Township School District Letter to Community - Drill Using the LENS Community Notification 2020-02-23

February 23, 2020

Dear Burlington Township Families,

We are providing an update on Project Guardian 2.0: Stay Alert! Last weekend, we successfully tested the new LENS (Lockdown Emergency Notification System) in all of our schools. As we continue to make the safety and security of our school community our top priority, we are ready to take the next step in this important safety implementation.

We will use the LENS system on Monday, February 24, 2020 as part of our required monthly drills. As a District, we do not announce drills ahead of time, however, this one time we want students, staff and community members to hear and see the new system so everyone is prepared for the future. This represents a significant change in how our District will announce lockdown drills and true active weapons threats in the future.

We are offering this information so everyone will know what to expect when the LENS system is engaged:

● Flashing lights will activate inside and outside of the building
● An automated "Lockdown" announcement will be made multiple times over the PA system, which can be heard both inside and outside of the building.
● These announcements are at a slightly lesser volume of a fire alarm.

After the announced drill on Monday, the District will use the LENS system to conduct all lockdown and active threat drills in the future similar to how the fire alarm system is used for fire drills. As we continue to drill in future months, community members may see the lights actively flashing on the outside of the building. Please remember, this is part of the drill protocol. In the unlikely event of a real threat, our community will be notified through our normal communication protocols.

Thank you for your continued support and diligence in working with us to keep our school community safe. If you have any questions about any of the new safety protocols, please email Team Guardian at [email protected].
