Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau conducted an investigation regarding a sexual assault incident of a 20 year-old female student in the Malibu area. The suspect unlawfully entered the victim’s residence in the early morning hours of February 8, 2020, and sexually assaulted the victim while she was sleeping in her bed. During the investigation, 34 year-old suspect, Matthew Caleb Fairchild, was identified and arrested for the sexual assault on February 19, 2020 by Major Crimes Detectives.
On February 21, 2020, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office at the Van Nuys Superior Court who filed one felony count of Assault with the Intent to Commit a Felony During the Commision of a First Degree Burglary, 220(b) PC, and one felony count of Residential Burglary, 459 PC. The suspect remains in custody and is being held on $1,000,000 bail. The suspect was arraigned today and his next court date is on March 4, 2020.

NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff Major Crimes Bureau Detectives arrested Matthew Fairchild, a 34 year old male, believed to be the same male depicted in the videotape from the incident near the 23900 Block of Civic Center way in Malibu. Matthew Fairchild was arrested near the 19100 Block of Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu at approximately 6:16 a.m. on Wednesday February 19, 2020 for assault with intent to commit a sex crime.
He is currently being held at Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s station on approximately $1,000,000.00 bail.
The facts of this case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review. We want to extend our appreciation to our community members who assisted in this investigation.
