Crime Alert Bulletin February 10-16, 2020

Notable Cases

On Thursday, 02-13-20 at approximately 2:42 a.m., Officer Bermudez and Officer Chavez were dispatched to the 900 block of Southgate Avenue on a hit and run collision. Dispatchers advised that three vehicles were involved, and two were parked vehicles. The officers arrived to find an unoccupied vehicle with the airbags deployed. Officer Mahan and Officer Dhaliwal found a female walking near Southgate Avenue and Westmoor Avenue and saw she was bleeding and was limping. The female verbally identified herself to the officers, and the vehicle registration matched the female’s name. As Officer Chavez was speaking to one of the owners of the parked vehicles, he heard the female yelling and screaming—stating she was not the driver of the vehicle. The female, a 26-year old Daly City resident, was taken to the hospital to be cleared of any injuries sustained in the collision and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and hit and run.

On Thursday, 02-13-20 at 5:01 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to the area of Forest Grove Drive and South Mayfair Avenue on a report of a subject who brandished a knife at two males. The two victims, both 14-year old Daly City residents, got off BART and were walking home on the path along South Mayfair Avenue and walked by a man who removed a knife with a blade of approximately 8” with the sharp end pointed towards them. The victims said the man didn’t say anything, but he began following them. One victim called the police and the said the subject was at the Burger King restaurant. After a brief investigation, Officer Jackson-Berrios arrested the 23-year old transient subject for brandishing. The victims were unharmed.

On Friday, 02-14-20 at approximately 4:00 a.m., Officer Dhaliwal was on patrol and noticed what appeared to be a hit and run collision on the center divider fence near the intersection of Southgate Avenue and Lake Merced Boulevard. Officer Mahan arrived to assist, and both officers saw a subject standing next to the suspect vehicle. The officers asked the subject if the vehicle was his, and the subject said it was his and that he was in his apartment, “heard a big bang” and came outside to see what happened. Officer Mahan said the vehicle’s left front wheel had fallen off, and the left front suspension was heavily damaged. When the officers spoke with the subject, they smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the subject. The officers administered field sobriety tests to the subject, a 31-year old Daly City resident, and after he failed the tests, he was arrested for driving under the influence and hit and run.

On Saturday, 02-15-20 at 2:25 a.m., Officer Greene arrested a 29-year old Daly City resident for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. This occurred following a traffic stop at John Daly Boulevard and Lake Merced Boulevard.

On Saturday, 02-15-20, at 11:24 a.m., the manager of the McDonald’s restaurant on Geneva Avenue said a male subject came through the drive through window and passed a fake $100 bill. The manager said his employee immediately noticed it was a fake bill and tore it in half and told the suspect to leave. The employee said a couple of minutes later, the person who passed the bill came into the restaurant and demanded to get the bill back. The employee said the subject argued that the bill was real and insisted on giving him another in exchange for it. The employee said the bill was fake as well and saw that they both had the same serial number. The employee told the subject to leave or he would call the police. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 02-16-20 at 9:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the lobby of Tropical Gardens on a report of a physical altercation involving a male subject being attacked by two males. Officer Todaro contacted the victim, a 43-year old Oakland resident, who was sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot. Because the victim was bleeding from multiple lacerations, the Officer Todaro called for paramedics to render aid. The victim said he met a woman on Facebook and planned to meet her for the first time at the Tropical Gardens establishment. The victim said he was under the impression that they were going to rent a spa room, and prior to reserving the room, he said the woman asked him for $500. The victim said no, and he said the woman told him she had two guy friends waiting outside who would beat him up if he did not give her the money. The victim refused again, and the woman threatened to call the police if he did not give her the money. The victim said then two males entered the lobby and demanded the victim to give them his backpack. The victim refused and was immediately attacked by both male subjects. The victim said he was able to contain his backpack, and at one point, one male pulled out a knife and began stabbing him multiple times in the arms and hand. The victim said after feeling as if his life was in danger, he handed $600 from his pocket to one of the males, and the attack ended with both males and the female running on foot and into a vehicle that drove westbound on San Pedro Road. The victim described the female suspect as white, 20-25 years old, 5’2”, 140 lbs., long red hair, wearing a white hoodie and black leggings. He described one male suspect as a black male adult with long dreadlocks, wearing a black baseball hat, black jacket and black pants. He described the last suspect as a Hispanic male, 20-25 years old 5’5”, 150 lbs., with black hair and wearing dark jeans. This investigation is continuing.

Robberies

There were two robberies and one attempted robbery during the past week.

On Saturday, 02-15-20 at 11:01 p.m., Officer Greene was dispatched to a robbery that occurred at the Lucky’s Store. The reporting party said a male stole items from the store and brandished a knife while he was leaving the store. The reporting party gave a description of the subject, and Officer Todaro found the subject near the dumpsters in the parking lot. The store manager positively identified the subject as the one who stole the items and brandished the knife. Officer Greene arrested the subject, a 22-year old Daly City resident, for robbery.

On Sunday, 02-16-20 at 4:52 p.m., two subjects stole bedding, toiletries and camping equipment from Target. When the loss prevention officers confronted the subjects, they said the subjects pushed them and left the store. Sergeant Klier and Officer Kett found the subjects matching the description walking along the shoulder of Serramonte Boulevard and the I-280 overpass. They later placed the subjects, a 38-year old female San Francisco resident and a 25-year old male transient, under arrest for robbery.

On Sunday, 02-16-20 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Sergeant Klier was dispatched to the Westlake Shopping Center near Safeway on a report of an attempted theft. The victim, a 12-year old Daly City resident, was standing next his bicycle and appeared upset. The victim said he was approached by a transient male subject who told him to give him his bicycle and attempted to pull it away from him. The victim told the suspect “no” and to leave him alone. The victim said the suspect threatened to kill him, and an unidentified male bystander approached them and pushed away the suspect, who then was last seen running towards the Safeway store. The victim identified the suspect as a white male adult, clean shaven, between 45-50 years old, shorter hair, “transient looking”, wearing a gray jacket, red shirt, and blue jeans. Officers were unable to find the suspect.

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there.
