Below is corrected information on the construction schedule on water mains and the Northwest Resiliency Park, updating the previous Nixle alert:

Water main repair on Willow Avenue

Repairs to the water main on 14th and Willow Avenue have been completed, and the roadway is anticipated to be fully open to traffic by this evening.

Water Infrastructure Upgrades

The City continues with the first phase of its water main replacement project, which will replace a total of 15 blocks, or 7,000 linear feet of Hoboken’s oldest water mains. The following activities are anticipated this week:

  • Tuesday 2/18/2020: Garden Street between 1st Street and 2nd Street will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM while the old water main is being abandoned. No water service interruptions are anticipated.
  • Tuesday 2/18/2020: Jefferson Street between 8th and 9th Streets will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM for installation and transfer of water services.  There will be temporary service interruptions for individual residents for up to an hour during the water service turnover. Each affected building will be notified by posting on the door.
  • Tuesday 2/18/2020 - Thursday 2/20/2020: Jefferson Street between 10th and 11th Streets will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM for installation of the new water main. The intersection of Jefferson and 11th will be closed for excavation and installation of water main casing work.
  • Thursday 2/20/2020 - Friday 2/21/2020: Jefferson Street between 8th and 9th Streets, and 8th Street between Adams and Madison Streets will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM for shut down of an old main.  There will be temporary service interruptions for individual residents for up to four hours during the water service turnover. Each affected building will be notified by posting on the door.
  • Wednesday 2/19/2020 - Friday 2/21/2020: Bloomfield Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM for installation of the new water main.
  • Wednesday 2/19/2020 and Friday 2/21/2020: Monroe Street between 3rd and 4th Street will be closed at times between the hours of 8 AM - 4 PM for installation of the new water main.
The construction of the water mains utilizes low interest and interest free loans from the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank, and does not use funding from the 2020 municipal budget. In 2019, the City entered into a contract with SUEZ that now provides for $33 million in water main upgrades through 2034, with an average of $2.2 million invested every year. More information about the water infrastructure upgrades project is available at https://www.hobokennj.gov/resources/drinking-water-infrastructure-upgrades-phase-1

Northwest Resiliency Park

Construction continues on the 5-acre Northwest Resiliency Park, which will be New Jersey’s largest resiliency park. The park will have above and below ground infrastructure to withhold up to 2 million gallons of rainwater to help mitigate local flooding. The following activities are anticipated this week:
  • Tuesday 2/18/2020: Wednesday 2/19/2020: Jefferson Street between 13th and 15th Streets will be closed from 8 AM to 10 PM for piping work in the street. Local Traffic only will be allowed for driveway access, no through traffic will be allowed. Parking will be restricted as well.
  • Wednesday 2/19/2020 - Friday 2/21/2020: 13th Street between Adams and Madison Streets will be closed from 8 AM - 4 PM for construction of a dewatering system in the North Lot. Parking will be restricted as well.
  • Tuesday 2/18/2020 - Friday 2/21/2020: Parking will be restricted on both sides of 15th Street from Jefferson Street to Willow Avenue 24-hrs a day to allow travel lanes to shift for piping work in the street.
  • Tuesday 2/18/2020 - Friday 2/21/2020: Construction will occur on the Northwest Park site to build the cistern which will hold water for reuse in irrigation.
The City uses a combination of low interest and interest-free loans, principal forgiveness for the resiliency features, and grant money to save over $19 million over the life of the project. The Northwest Resiliency Park also utilizes the Open Space Trust Fund to pay for the construction costs of the Northwest Park, and is not utilizing any funding from the 2020 municipal budget. More information about the Northwest Resiliency Park project is available at www.hobokennj.gov/nwpark.
