Peter Tonga arrested after stealing a pickup and ramming a police vehicle

At 6:53 AM on February 12, 2020, a 2003 orange Chevy Avalanche pickup was reported as stolen to APD; the owner was inside her home and heard it being driven away from the 400-block of N Flower Street. The pickup was unoccupied, unlocked, and running with the key inside when it was taken.
Dispatch aired a locate for the vehicle over the radio.  At 7:01 AM an APD detective saw the stolen truck in the Mush Inn parking lot at 333 Concrete Street.  The detective pulled into the parking lot and activated his overhead emergency lights.  The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Peter V. Tonga, drove straight into the front of the detective’s vehicle and subsequently exited the parking lot.  Other officers arriving in the area were able to immediately block Tonga’s vehicle in at 5th and Concrete. Officers gave Tonga commands and he was taken into custody without further incident.
Both vehicles involved in the collision were towed from the scene.  The detective had struck his head when he was hit; he was transported to the hospital for evaluation and subsequently released.
After being interviewed by detectives at the Anchorage Police Department, Tonga was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Vehicle Theft I, two counts of Theft II, Fail to Stop, Assault II, and Criminal Mischief III.
