UPDATE: Traffic Alert; fatality investigation; Inbound Glenn Highway shut down at Fort Rich w/no access to Anchorage

Update at 3:00 AM:

At 2:11 AM on Sunday, February 9, 2020, APD Dispatch received a call from a citizen stating an adult male was stumbling on the shoulder of the Glenn Highway.  A few minutes later, before officers arrived on scene, another citizen called APD Dispatch and stated he had hit a male who was in the roadway on the Glenn.  Other motorists also stopped and began CPR on the pedestrian.  Medics took over once they arrived on scene; the pedestrian was declared deceased shortly thereafter.  The involved driver stayed on scene and is being cooperative with police.

The collision occurred on the inbound lanes of the Glenn Highway near the power plant.  As of now the inbound lanes of the highway are completely shut down between the Fort Rich Exit and the Muldoon Exit.  There is currently no way for traffic north of Fort Rich to access Anchorage. An updated Nixle will be sent once traffic can once again get into town.

It will not be known if alcohol and/or drugs was a factor until toxicology results are received. The victim’s identity will be released once next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.

APD Case 20-4874

All lanes of the Inbound/Southbound Glenn Highway are closed at the main JBER Exit (formerly known as the Ft Rich Exit) while officers investigate a vehicle collision with injuries. Vehicles traveling inbound on the Glenn will be diverted off the highway at the JBER exit. No traffic will be able to travel inbound on the Glenn after the JBER exit.
