DATE/TIME: Friday, February 7, 2020, 5:20 p.m.
INCIDENT: Search and Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Deep Creek Hot Springs Trail, Lake Arrowhead
VICTIM: Raeny Ramsey, 24 years old, resident of Long Beach, Ca.
SUMMARY:
On Friday, February 7, 2020, Ramsey and her friends went on a hike to the Deep Creek Hot Springs. They parked their vehicle on Highway 173 in the Lake Arrowhead area. During the hike, Ramsey lost her footing and suffered a leg injury. Due to the injury, Ramsey was unable to hike back to her vehicle. A passing hiker contacted Ramsey and called 911 to get her help.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit was contacted for a search and rescue. The crew of 40 King 3 responded to the Deep Creek area and conducted an extensive search. The flight crew located Ramsey and her group of friends on a narrow trail on an otherwise steep mountain-side. Ground units were unable to access the area by vehicle. The flight crew determined a hoist rescue was needed to expedite Ramsey to a medical provider.
The rescue operation was conducted during nighttime hours and required the crew to utilize night vision equipment. A volunteer flight medic was lowered down from the helicopter to Ramsey. The medic assessed Ramsey and secured her into a rescue harness. Ramsey was hoisted into the helicopter and then transported to Mountains Community Hospital for medical treatment.
