Community Crime Report January 2020

Unfortunately the month started off and continued with officers investigating several mental health and family domestic incidents. Northfield Police do not share these private incidents in our monthly communication to the community. Police investigations that involve personal issues such as incorrigible or runaway juveniles, welfare checks or death investigations that have no impact on others in the community are also kept private.

Officers responded to 497 calls for service this month.

01/07/2020 *Larceny by Conversion (Fraud)
Westbrook –A report was filed that an unauthorized subject requested to port a cell phone number from the victim’s phone. Once the number was transferred to a new phone the suspect gained access to the victim’s credit card company and requested an additional credit card. The suspect made unauthorized purchases, and caused the victim’s phone to be disabled. The victim was able to eventually get his phone number returned to him and his account was credited for the unauthorized purchases. A police report was filed and Verizon Law Enforcement group is handling internally.

01/09/2020 *Check Fraud – Insufficient Funds
Main St- A local business cashed a payroll check which the bank later revealed had insufficient funds. The investigation revealed the issuer of the check. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office awaiting charges.

01/11/2020 *Arrest – Operating While Intoxicated
E North Territorial & Whitmore Lake Rd- An Officer responded to a vehicle in the ditch. The officer arrived to discover the female driver appeared to be intoxicated. After she attempted preliminary field sobriety tasks, it was determined that the driver was under the influence of intoxicants. The driver was arrested, further analysis was completed and the female driver was lodged in the Washtenaw County jail. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.

01/13/2020 *Retail Fraud
E. North Territorial - Sunoco Gas Station An officer responded to a report of a retail fraud that occurred on 01/12/2020. The complainant stated that an unknown black female subject arrived, requested tobacco products from the clerk, and proceeded to peruse the store taking items while the clerk placed the tobacco products in a bag. The female suspect, approached the counter grabbed the bag and exited the store to a waiting vehicle. The investigation revealed the identity of the suspect and the case has been presented to the prosecutor’s office awaiting charges to be authorized.

01/13/2020 *Identity Theft Fraud
5000 Block of Walnut Creek – A complainant reported that on December 19, someone used his name and social security number to purchase a Verizon phone and service plan without his permission. Upon receipt of a bill, the complainant contacted Verizon who cancelled the phone and credited his account. The complainant was advised to contact the Federal Trade Commission regarding this matter and to run a credit check to confirm no additional services or products have been made against his name. The case remains under investigation.

01/15/2020 * Harassing Communication
9300 Block of Main St-A complainant reported that an ex-boyfriend has continued, for months, to send her un-wanted, but non-threatening messages. An officer contacted the sender of the messages explaining the Michigan harassment laws, the suspect stated he understood and would no longer send messages to the complainant. Case closed.

01/14/2020 *Suspicious Situation
7600 block of Shady Lane – A complainant reported that his truck had been egged sometime between 6 pm on January 13 and 6 am on January 14. No damage was determined to be caused by the egg and no suspect identified. The case is closed.

01/15/2020 *Fraud
7800 Shady Lane- A complainant reported that he received a text message that his phone number was being transferred to another phone. Once the phone number was transferred, the suspect used it to access the victim’s yahoo account. The complainant does not store passwords on his phone and at the time of the report no financial accounts had been accessed. The complainant was advised to run a personal credit check. The complainant’s carrier is attempting to retrieve his phone number and reissue to him.

01/16/2020 *Trespass Notice Served – Neighbor Trouble
Shady Beach- Officers responded to a call that a neighbor had driven across the lawn of another. Upon arrival and interview with the homeowner, it was determined that the suspect neighbor frequently trespasses upon the land of the other. A trespass warning was given to the suspect neighbor and advised to stay off the others’ property or he would be arrested.

01/20/2020 *Arrest - Driving on Suspended License 3rd Offense
9800 Block of Main St – Officers responded to a one vehicle traffic crash that struck the side of a building. The investigation revealed that the brakes may have failed, however the driver was driving on a suspended driver’s license 3rd offense. The driver was arrested, the license plate removed and the vehicle impounded. The case was submitted to the prosecutor’s office.

01/21/2020 *Fraud-Identity Theft
500 Block of Amethyst – A complainant reported that she was contacted by her bank regarding charges against her credit card. These charges were made in California without authorization. The complainant had previously been a victim in December of someone opening new accounts in her name. The banking fraud department is investigating and have placed a hold on her credit card transactions. The victim was advised to run a credit report, and contact the Federal Trade Commission.

**** Always check your credit card transactions. Remember too, to request an annual credit report that should be reviewed thoroughly. Annual Credit Reports can be obtained from the 3 major credit reporting agencies and can be obtained 3 ways – online: www.annualcreditreport.com , by telephone: 1-877-322-8228 or by mail “Annual Credit Report Request Service P.O Box 105281 Atlanta GA 30348-5281.

01/23/2020 *Insufficient Funds- Check Fraud
6500 Block of Whitmore Lake – A business representative filed a report that he received a fraudulent check for supplies that were purchased. A possible suspect has been identified and the case remains under investigation.

01/26/2020 *Larceny (Theft)
100 Block of Barker Rd- A victim reported that she keeps her wallet size purse under her seat in her vehicle. Upon leaving work, the victim encountered two females with a vehicle that would not start. The victim provided rides to the females and another male subject and after dropping each off at their respective destinations, the victim discovered her purse missing. The case remains under investigation.

01/27/2020 *Arrest – Driving on A Suspended License
Pontiac Trail & Earhart – After observing traffic violations ( no passing, speeding), an Officer made a traffic stop and discovered the driver had outstanding warrants, several suspensions against his license and no valid insurance on the vehicle. The driver was arrested, his vehicle impounded and the plate was confiscated for destruction. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.

01/28/2020 *Identity Theft
6300 Block of Sutton – A complainant reported that between December 13 and January 21, several attempts had been made to procure credit cards and cell phones using the complainant’s identity. The complainant discovered one successful phone purchase and after reporting the fraud was made whole. The complainant has filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission.

01/29/2020 *Identity Theft
5100 Block of Nolar – A complainant reported that someone used his identity to open a cable service in Las Vegas. The complainant discovered this after receiving a call regarding an outstanding bill.. The complainant checked his credit report and is currently I the process of having the report amended.
