Getting To Know IMPD - In Honor of Black History Month

Chaplain Patricia Holman: has been with the City of Indianapolis for a total of 35.5 years. Chaplain Holman served as a police officer for 32 years and has served the past 3.5 years in the role of Senior Chaplain for the police department. Chaplain Holman is proud to carry on the legacy of law enforcement chaplaincy. The Chaplains Office is a place officers and civilians can go to find comfort and solace. IMPD Chaplains are tasked with line of duty deaths, active and retired officer funerals, crisis intervention, critical incidents, department and officer wellness and much more.

Although she has held multiple roles and ranks within the agency some of her most memorable roles have been the Training Academy and Mounted Patrol. Chaplain Holman served as a Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain within the Training Academy. “Helping to mold and shape recruit officers was one of the highlights of her career” said Chaplain Holman. Some recruits you knew right away would have a major impact on the agency. She also enjoyed her time as a Mounted Patrol Officer. It is remarkable to see how horses can bridge gaps within community relations.

In Chaplains Holman’s current role, she enjoys providing a space where officers can go to express their faith. Having a diverse department means having officers with different belief systems.  The Chaplains Office is a place for everyone. After serving a successful career as an officer, she believes that her faith is what helped her get through the challenges of law enforcement. Chaplain Holman stated she personally experienced loss as an officer and she understands the importance of having a place for hurting people to go.
