SUPER BOWL LIV – FANS DON’T LET FANS DRIVE DRUNK AND DUI DOESN’T JUST MEAN BOOZE

SUPER BOWL LIV – FANS DON’T LET FANS DRIVE DRUNK AND DUI DOESN’T JUST MEAN BOOZE

In partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the San Mateo Police Department wants you to celebrate Super Bowl LIV responsibly. Don’t Drive Impaired.

San Mateo, CA – Super Bowl LIV is right around the corner, Sunday, February 2, 2020. This year, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up with the San Mateo Police Department to remind football fans and Super Bowl partygoers that designated drivers are the best defense against the dangers of impaired driving. If your Super Bowl celebration involves alcohol, plan for a ride home with a sober driver. If you’re hosting the party, take care of your guests and make sure they have a designated driver. We want to remind everyone that Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Our friends at the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) remind us that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”  If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, might impair you enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing. Especially in combination with alcohol and/or other drugs and can result in a DUI.

In 2018, 10,511 people were killed in drunk driving accidents. Don’t fumble this Super Bowl Sunday and become one of those statistics. Impaired driving is completely preventable. We want fans to remember that it is a choice. Drink or driver, but NEVER do both!

NHTSA reminds us “We will all win on Super Bowl Sunday if we follow these keys to the game:

Know the Rules: It’s illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. When it comes to drinking and driving, law enforcement doesn’t throw a yellow flag; they throw the book at you. You’ll get pulled over, arrested, and prosecuted. Your wallet takes a big hit, too: the average DUI court case costs approximately $10,000.

Play It Safe: Defenses win championships; your best defense is to plan a safe ride. From buses and trains to car services and designated drivers, connect with the option that will get you home safely.

Be a Party MVP: Volunteer to be a designated driver. Let your squad know that you’ll be there for them when the party’s over with a safe, sober ride home.

If You’ve Been Drinking, You’re Benched: There’s no place on the road for anyone who has been drinking. If someone tries to drive after drinking, tell them to ride the bench until you help them find a sober ride home. If you’re hosting the party, you’re the head coach. Make the right call: take their keys before they drink and drive.
We’re all on the same team when it comes to preventing drunk driving. And, however you or your guests travel on Super Bowl Sunday, always buckle up. Your seat belt is your best defense in any vehicle crash.”

SMPD officers will be out and about looking for impaired drivers. This is not the type of interception we are looking for on game day. Play it safe, play it smart. With public transportation, ride share services, and designated drivers, there is no reason for you to get behind the wheel of a car if you’re under the influence. Be a winner this Sunday and every day!
