Suspect arrested in connection with recent fatal hit & run collision

On January 20th at about 10:30 am, a University of California Police Officer saw a man inside a parked vehicle violently attacking a female passenger in the area of Sixth Street and University Avenue.  When the officer tried to intervene, the man drove away—with the woman screaming for help.  While fleeing from the area, the suspect drove onto a sidewalk—where he struck and killed a 58-year-old woman.

Since this incident, many community members have contacted the Berkeley Police Department with information about the incident and our investigators have actively followed-up on the information.  During the investigation, investigators learned the suspect responsible for the recent fatal collision is a 29-year-old man named Alexander McGee.

On January 29th, members of the Berkeley Police Department’s Special Response Team were able to safely arrest Alexander McGee in the City of Oakland.

Today, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Alexander McGee with murder, willfully eluding a police officer—causing serious bodily injury, hit and run resulting in death, vehicular manslaughter and felony domestic violence.

The Berkeley Police Department takes great pride in keeping our community safe.  We appreciate the public’s support and are pleased that we were able to bring justice to those who wish to do harm to our community.
