Incident:  NPD Assists CHP with DUI Collision

Incident Summary

Today,  at 10:17 AM, the Novato Police Department received a report that a vehicle was driving south on Highway 101 and collided with a sound wall between De Long Ave and Rowland Blvd. The caller told dispatchers the vehicle exited the freeway and drove north on Redwood Blvd.

The vehicle was weaving between lanes and nearly hit several parked vehicles near Lamont Ave. The vehicle eventually drove into a ditch on Alice Street and became stuck on a raised curb.

Officers arrived on scene and found an unconscious man in the driver's seat who was clearly impaired. Officers noticed the vehicle was locked and the windows were rolled up. Officers attempted to wake the man but were unsuccessful.

With assistance from Novato Fire District personnel, officers determined the driver might have been suffering from a medical emergency. Officers broke the front passenger window and unlocked the doors. The male driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated and later arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance by the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was identified as David Guimont, a 51 year old resident of Novato. The collision on the freeway was investigated by the CHP and the collision in the city was investigated by the Novato Police officers. We would like to thank the community members who reported this incident and the Highway Patrol for their assistance with the investigation. We can all work together to keep Novato and Marin County safe!
