Occurred Date:   January 12, 2020
Occurred Time:   12:20 - 12:25 PM
Location:             Sports Basement 100 Vintage Way, Novato, CA
Suspect(s):          Marcus Anderson, 28-year-old Oakland resident

Incident Summary

On January 12, 2020, the Novato Police Department received a report from Sports Basement that a male and female entered the store, located in Vintage Oaks Shopping Center and stole a large quantity of high end clothing. The online report filed by Sports Basement employees indicated the two suspects boldly walked out of the store with armfuls of high-end jackets, loaded the stolen clothing into a silver BMW and fled the scene.

Yesterday, on January 14, 2020, Novato Police were notified by a witness that the vehicle involved with the previous theft from Sports Basement was currently at the shopping center. Officers responded and contacted 28 year old, Marcus Anderson of Oakland and a 40 year old female, who was later determined to not be the female involved in this investigation (photo attached). While on scene, officers and Detectives learned that on January 14, 2020, Marcus Anderson entered several stores and returned a variety of clothing items without a receipt. The vehicle associated with Marcus Anderson was a silver BMW, which contained a significant amount of brand new clothing and a device used to remove tags from clothing.

Marcus Anderson was identified by a witness as one of the suspects responsible for the theft from Sports Basement on January 12th. He was booked into Marin County Jail for several counts of burglary and organized retail theft. The original crime included a female accomplice, who has yet to be identified (photo attached).

If you have any information about the unidentified female shown in the surveillance photos, please contact the Novato Police Department at 415-897-4361. Refer to Novato Police Case #20-1015.

Without the help of our community partners, another business may have become victim to organized retail theft. Organized retail theft has become a growing problem in the Bay Area and one that Novato is not immune to. We continue to ask our community members to report suspicious activity and vehicles in neighborhoods and shopping centers. We work in partnership with our community to protect, serve and create a safer Novato. If you see something, say something!
